IntelliCAN Transportation Systems Inc., a subsidiary of IntelliCAN Systems Inc., is a niche company specialized in advanced modeling and simulation of complex transportation systems and the development of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) software solutions for traffic and transit systems control and management. IntelliCAN was established in 1999 as a partnership by Dr. Baher Abdulhai and Dr. Amer Shalaby, two University of Toronto professors determined to bring advanced solutions to mainstream transportation engineering. IntelliCAN Systems and IntelliCAN Transportation Systems were incorporated in 2003. Our mission is to fuse state of the art and state of the practice for effective transportation solutions for the 21st century.

IntelliCAN has recently led a number of high profile projects in Canada. Most notably is the large scale traffic microsimulation project conducted for the Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corporation (TWRC), modeling some dozen alternatives for the Gardiner Expressway including a retain option, a tunnel option, a remove option, an ameliorate option and a number of hybrid options. Another high profile project by IntelliCAN is the St. Clair Environmental Assessment project (in conjunction with Marshall Macklin Monaghan of Toronto). IntelliCAN developed a number of microsimulation models of several treatment plans for the St. Clair corridor in Toronto, including a streetcar exclusive right of way option, mixed transit-traffic option, transit priority and few other options. IntelliCAN has also developed elaborate simulation models of Highway 407 and the King St. transit corridor in Toronto. Currently, IntelliCAN is involved in developing an operational “best practice” travel demand modelling system for the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

The IntelliCAN team, led by Dr. Baher Abdulhai and Dr. Amer Shalaby and Associates, possesses extensive expertise in transportation planning and engineering and Intelligent Transportation Systems, covering Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS) and Advanced Public Transit Systems (APTS). Areas of direct expertise include automatic incident detection, adaptive signal control, freeway ramp metering, dynamic traffic assignment, dynamic origin-destination (OD) estimation, dynamic traffic routing, GPS-based network probing, safety-conscious route guidance, microsimulation modeling of complex transportation networks, optimization-based calibration of microsimulation models, GIS based representation of transportation networks, transit assignment, microsimulation modeling of park-and-ride transit stations, adaptive transit signal priority algorithms, bus/streetcar operations control algorithms, prediction models of bus arrival and departure times using AVL and APC technologies, dynamic scheduling of flex-route transit, dynamic holding control for rail-to-bus connection protection, GPS technology applications to transportation systems, GPS-based person travel surveys, GPS-based corridor travel time studies, applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to transportation systems control and management, intelligent transport systems architecture, active-vision-based network surveillance, vehicle-signature analysis, work-zone traffic management; and design and configuration of traffic management centres.
